Target audience

The audience that we targeted would belong to a younger demographic. The use of the younger actors such as Olive, Angus and Walter.  The thriller is from the perspective of the young teenager who clearly has psychological issues. It is not common to see the focus of a thriller movie to be on a young teenage boy. The typical trait may show an older man or a young girl. This is why I feel that our thriller will attract a younger audience.

Day 2 of Filming 'All Aboard'

The second day of filming was done on the 12th of February and once again most things mainly worked out to plan. I arrived to filming a 1 hour late due to an issue with public transport but by the time of my arrival the group had already picked everything up and had begun filming.  When filming on locations such as the staircase and doorway to the toilets we had an issue with getting the tripod to fir properly. The base of the tripod we were using took up a lot of space so we had to keep adjusting the tripod. As you can see in the picture on the right we were filming on a very narrow landing and so had issues with setting up the Tripod correctly. The tripod was also slightly broken on one of the legs so we had to keep a hold on the leg to get an even shot.

Shutter Island - Martin Scorsee

I recently watched the  absoloutely brilliant movie that is Shutter Island. Shutter island is a psychological thriller directed by Martin Scorsee. I found the movie to be gripping and intriguing at all times. The movie constantly had me on edge trying to predict the outcome of movie. Upon discovering the ending I was completely astonished at the detail and thought that went into conjuring up this ending.

The film was released on February 13th of October 2010 had and had a budget of $80,000,000 and on its opening weekend made $41,062,440 which is essentially half of its money back. Sutter Island grosseD £127,968,405 making it a fairly successful movie. The Film had overall won the attention of many critics however it is said that the confusing ending ruins the movie, some critics said it was no different from the cliche of waking up from a dream in movies. However I completely disagree with statement and personally think that Shutter Island is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Forgetting to film a scene

After thinking we had finally finished with filming the opening and had gone into school to begin the editing of the thriller we realised that we had forgotten to film one last scene. We had to edit around the footage and make sure that we got back to filming the scene the next weekend.

Filming in Winter

One thing that we didn't really plan for was how fast daytime moves in the winter. When looking back at the footage of the thriller opening we realised that in a lot of the shots it was quite obvious what time of day it was. This has created the issue of scenes that are next to each other being filmed in a completely different light. We will have to edit the thriller in a way so that it makes chronological sense.  Here you can clearly see the difference in lighting due to the two shots being filmed in different lightings. This was also an important scene where symmetricality was crucial to effectively show the flashback

Saturday night fever - Charlie is gone

After  Charlie left the school we had an issue with finding the finished copy of saturday night fever with all the credit's in it. We are struggling to find the finished copy and it is stressing the group out because we don't have a finished copy of the opening sequence.

Our camera

The camera we used was called the Canon Xf100 and the tripod we used was called the Manfrotto 546GBK. When it came to the camera overall we used it with ease however we did make a few mistakes when changing the settings on the camera. At some points in filming the opening the sound settings were slightly off and so in editing we had to spend some time editing the sound.
Although it is not to visible in this picture on the left there was a lot of fuzz in the frame because we were filming in to low light. A DSLR camera would have been more appropriate  camera to use in this lighting.

Lighting system

The Lighting system we used was called the Manfrotto LED light. We used the light to increase the size of shadows in each shot. We were able to change the warmth and coldness of the light to create a warm or cold shot. We used the light effectively when trying to show erie shadows on the staircases which in my opinion added to the enigma.

On the photo on the on the  bottom left hand side we used the colder settings on the light to produce a spooky silhouette of the abusive father who is left a mystery in the opening scene.

Day 1 of filming 'All Aboard'

The 5th of February was the first day we began filming our thriller opening. We all arrived at Mo's house relatively early and to my surprise not a single person was late. We quickly got to working wasting no time.  The only main issue we had all day was that our main actor (Angus) was going to a football match so we had to work quickly so we could film as many scenes as possible. From this we learnt that it is important to make formal plans before hand with all members of the project.

Mistakes

After finishing the editing for our opening thriller the first watching it over we realised that there were objects that had been miss placed in the shots. In one Shot the jackets were hanging on a hook and in another shot there weren't any jackets on the door.

Another mistake that was made in the Opening sequence was that the clothing did not always match in the following scene. In the pictures below the photo on the left is shot after the picture on the right which clearly shows an error in wardrobe.

The scar

To portray past pain we wanted to show a healed scar in the opening. I feel that this was portrayed well by the scar on his back which was done using special make-up that Mo's mum applied to Angus.
We were careful to not damage the scar when putting the t-shirt on and off it was very delicate and easy to rub off.

Our evaluation got deleted :(

Today has not been a good day, we were minutes away from finishing our group evaluation when I sent a document to Mo and it deleted the entire evaluation. We had spent hours on editing the evaluation only for it to be deleted. It was harsh reality to face but we have to come in the Easter to redo the whole thing. From this our group learnt that it is crucial that we regularly save our progress when working on coursework.

Use of flashbacks

When filming our flashbacks we had to make sure we were relevant to that point in time. We made it so that both actors had similar clothing and entered the room in a similar motion. The use of similar clothing and similar settings gives it the essence of an actual flashback.  We used Non-Linear editing to match the two different time periods together.  When it came to the camera we tried to have the actor fill the same amount of the frame as the previous shot. that was so that we could show a graphic match of time being collapsed.

Preliminary task script

Here is the Script that Josh wrote for the Preliminary task. It is a slightly funny ironic script

Here is the script to our preliminary task that josh wrote.

Bruno: We need to film that preliminary task Josh.

Josh: Oh yeah, we should get that sorted as soon as possible.
We also need to stick to the 180.

Bruno: Wait, what's the 180 degree rule again?

Josh: It's when two characters from the same scene maintain the same left-to-right relationship with one another.
And it needs to be shit-reverse-shot.

Bruno: Ok, lets get started on that now then.

How we came up with our production company

The name M4 productions was made because we all have the letter M in our surname/forename and the number 4 was the groups lucky number. We wanted to make the name of our production company short and catchy, making it easier for the audience to remember.

Preliminary Task

Here is my Preliminary task that we shot as a group. When filming the Preliminary task we learnt how to correctly do a shot reverse shot and abiding by the 180 degree rule. We filmed me entering the room and moving to a conversation between me and Josh. Josh wrote the script for the preliminary task.

All Aboard Animatic

Here is the Animatic for our thriller.

Writing a longline

An example of a Logline that I particularly like is the Logline for The Hangover which goes- A Las Vegas-set comedy centred around three groomsmen who lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him.

My Logline would go- A troubled teen and his best friend a constantly bombarded by bullies at school everyday. When one day the best friend commits suicide which sparks the mental          illness that resides in the young teenage boy.

Combining treatments

Upon trying decide which out of the two treatments we would go with our teacher (nuraj) told us that combining the treatments to create a synergetic opening is a possible. We tampered with the idea for a while attempting to see where the treatments could interlink with each other.  However in the end it became to difficult to decide, so we are now deciding on either of the two treatments.

Todays jobs

This is the first official day of working on the thriller opening and the group is enthusiastic and working well. Today we decided on what each members job should be. I was assigned with making the storyboard because of my superior art skills to Mo and Josh. Josh is collecting any props that we may need for the opening and Mo is now also working on the animatic and other things.

Final decision - Treatment

Today after a long debate the group decided on which treatment we will be going by. We decided on using josh's treatment because we believe that altogether it is a more interesting storyline and is more doable than the other treatments. At first we were told to attempt to combine the two and create a synergetic opening. Due to limited time we had to go on and simply work with only Josh's treatment alone. As a group we believe that josh's treatment had the making of a more interesting thrilller and so went with his treatment alone.

Josh's Inspiration

This is the article Josh found his inspiration from. Rebecca Coriam was abducted on a cruise and was never found.

Picking our Actors and Actreses

When deciding on who would act in our opening it was crucial to us that Mikey and Mikey as a child had some sort of resemblance.  The easiest way to go from there was to find two people with the same buzz cut thus we found the actors who met this criteria.

Angus Van-pelt as Mikey- Angus does A-level Drama and is a good friend so he was the first person we turned to when deciding on who would act as Mikey

Walter Stanley as Mikey (CHILD) - Walter does drama as a student and feels passionate about drama. He also followed the criteria in having the same hairstyle as Angus so was a perfect match. He is also Mo's sibling.

Olive Zofia as Lily - Olive does drama GCSE and did not have a huge role the opening so we picked Mo's sister. It eliminated having to spend more time finding another actress

Benjamin James as Abusive father- We chose Mo's Father to play this role because all we needed was the Silhoutte and he was available any time.

Josh's Treatment

This is Josh's Treatment

Ideas for my Thriller Title- All aboard Lilly was always treated like a princess by her father, right up until he died of Heart failure 5 months ago. However things were different for Lillys brother Mikey. Mikeys childhood was difficult; he was physically bullied at school and has never had any close friends. Beneath the dark surface lies a ghastly secret for Mikey, will he finally open up to his family? Where and when: On board a cruise ship around Antigua, in March 1998. What: Lilly Hooper disappeared while on a cruise ship with her parents and younger brother. She left her cabin early in the morning, presumably for a quick smoke, as she left barefoot, only with her cigarettes and lighter. Why is it so creepy? Before Lilly Hooper disappeared, there were instances of the crew onboard giving her “special attention”. This led her parents to believe she was kidnapped and led into sex slavery, supported by images that appear to be Lilly Hooper (although its impossible to identify her as there was a plastic bag over her head) in her underwear sent via an anonymous email directly to her Brother. In the background of the picture there was a sign which read “crew only”, which suggests the photo was in-fact taken on the ship. The captain says it would be impossible for Lilly to have left the cruise at any time, but just as more impossible for someone to keep her captive on “my ship”, “we do room checks and cleaning everyday right up until we reach our destination, were in the middle of the Caribbean sea, it would be impossible for her to go anywhere” Act 1- Lilly, her mum and her brother are at home packing for their 1 week Cruise ship holiday. They then get on the cruise, unpack and Lilly goes for a cigarette and buys a glass of wine from the bar. When the mum goes to the toilet in the bar area she notices the bartender talking to Lilly, in a perhaps flirty manner. That Evening Lilly her Mum and her Brother have a sit down meal at the restaurant. The mum recognises their waiter, its infact the same man who was the bartender earlier, talking to Lilly. The mans face was tight, almost as if he had loads of plastic surgery. He looked fake and made up, with not a single hair on his head. The following morning, that same bartender, now dressed in room service clothes with a creepy client next to him knock on the cabin door of Lilly and Mums room and insist of cleaning the room. Mum finds this odd, not only because it’s the same man yet again, but also because they have just been woken up on holiday at 7am so there room they have payed for can be cleaned. Act 2- Following day, Mum is lying by the pool reading while Lilly and Mikey are having a swim. Mum turns to her side and the creepy man is reading a newspaper right next to her, in perfect view of Lilly and Mikey. Mum then shouts “ LUNCH” at Lilly and Mikey, just as she says the names, she sees the creepy guys client from the room service sitting high up in a chair, hes the life guard. Mum then talks to Mikey in private and explains how she thinks they are being spyed on and something is not quite right. That evening the brother goes to the casino and sees Lilly talking to two men, he watches them and notices them hand her a piece of folded up paper, they kiss Lilly on the cheek and go away. Mikey then goes back to the cabin room and tells the mum in panic of what he just saw and the mum insists Mikey should go and talk to Lilly himself and find out what the hell is going on. So Mikey does exactly that, him and Lilly drink several cocktails at the bar. Eventually Mikey asks Lilly about the piece of paper and Lilly shows him the piece of paper and it is a telephone number. “ The guy likes me, He just gave me his number” Lilly said. Mikey explains how Lilly has to be careful because she doesn’t know this Man, he explains how worried him and mum are. Lilly snaps and tells Mikey to mind his own business “ I can look after my self, your not my Dad” Mikey then laughs in histerics and says “ yeah im not that monster” This is when Mikeys secret is finally let out by Mikey. Lilly refuses to believe Mikey was abused by their Father. She not only refuses to believe it, she screams at Mikey, calling him an attention seeker, a liar, a freak, a deluded loner. She runs back to the Cabin room and shouts to Mikey “ IM TELLING MUM IN THE MORNING YOU SICKO” Mikey knows Lilly cannot tell Mum. Mum is 6 months pregnant with the “ abusive dead fathers baby”- Mikey knows it would destroy the Mother, and anyhow, Lilly doesn’t believe him, Mikey knows for a fact that the Mother wont either. So what does Mikey do? Does he wait until the morning to explain this dark secret hes kept for years to the mum? No. Because that wouldn’t work, theres no evidence, and humans believe what they want to believe, it would ruin his family, and ruin his life. So Mikey comes up with a horrific plan to Kill his older sister, so his mum can be saved from this dark secret which will destroy her entire life, and the future babys life. He sets his alarm for 8am because he knows Lucy goes out for a ciggerate around that time. Mikey is a smart 18 year old. He grabs Lilly, throws her into a spair cabin room at the very end of the cruise ship, puts a bag over her head, takes a photo, sends that photo to him self and double bluffs to whole situation, so the mum would never suspect it was him. Mikey was of course the one who put the sign “ cabin crew only” up to make it seem like it was the creepy man/men who were involved in Lucys abduction. Mikey then knocks lucy out with a few punches to the head and throws her over the boat in the middle of the Caribbean sea. Act 3- “ 2 years later”- Mikey finally gets caught and gets put in a mental intuition. Mikey has not spoken since he arrived. The mum kills her self when finding out about Mikeys dark secret involving the abuse of Mikey perfomed by the father. The baby goes into care but Mikey is made a Godfather, and when he is let out of the mental intuition at 30 years old, he treats the baby like his own.

Editing our Thriller Opening

Today was the groups first day in editing our opening. To start off we began to mark the clips that we wanted to keep and the clips we wanted to delete.  We arranged the clips we wanted into   chronological order based on the storyboard.  We spent the whole lesson studying each clip carefully to make sure we picked the correct footage.  We also had the issue that duplicate's kept appearing in the final footage and we would constantly have to delete it. It may have been something we were doing wrong we still have a lot to learn when it comes to editing
