Room- Lenny Abrahamson

Room opening title sequence thriller 2015 Lenny Abrahamson

Today we watched The Room a dark family thriller about the abduction of a young girl who is kept captive for years on end and in that time gives birth to child who will grow up not being able to comprehend the outside world. In the opening of Room the audience is given several conventional thriller techniques.  It is based on a true story which adds to the thriller aspect and makes the viewer more uncomfortable.

  • Lighting- lighting is very dark and gloomy. Complimnets the mentality of the characters as depressing and harsh.
  • Sound - Music is soft, quite and slow.  There is also the use of Non diegetic sound at the beginning where they use a type soliloquy where the child speaks to the audience. This creates intrigue because it tells the story from his point of view.
  • Camera - Birds eye view of the room. Lots of the screen is cropped to create enigma. Also zooming into object to the point that they are unidentifiable creates enigma.
  • It is a hybrid genre of family and thriller. I believe this makes the movie more controversial.
  • Fast cuts which further evokes intrigue.
